Understanding health testing
What common tests and records mean, and what they cannot tell you.
Why testing matters
Testing reduces the risk of passing on inherited or contagious conditions. Which tests matter depends on the species and breed.
Types of records
- Genetic/DNA tests for known inherited conditions
- Physical evaluations by a vet or recognised program (e.g. hips, eyes, hearts in dogs)
- Infectious-disease testing, important in livestock and horses
- Vaccination and treatment records
- Official health certificates for movement between regions
Limits
A test is a snapshot. Ask who ran it, when, and whether the result is from the animal itself or its parents. Always consider an independent vet exam for high-value purchases.
